Could you imagine going without air conditioning during this time of the year? It would be unbearable! So if you were either told, or you’ve found, that your air conditioner is reaching the point that a replacement is advised, then we recommend you get this taken care of now and don’t leave it to chance that your cooling system might last the rest of summer.
That being said, we don’t want you to rush out and buy the first air conditioning system you can find. We understand that you don’t want to be stuck with a broken-down system in the middle of one of the hottest days of the year, but an air conditioner is a pretty large investment and requires careful consideration, for a few different reasons.
We are the team to turn to when you are ready for your San Antonio, TX air conditioner replacement. In the meantime, we’ve shared some information below that could help you out with choosing your next cooling system.
Cooling System Efficiency
You’ll always benefit from choosing an air conditioning system with a high efficiency rating, as long as it is a good fit for your home and your budget. In 2015, the federal regulation standard for heating and cooling system efficiency rose from 13 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) to 14. A system’s SEER rating describes the cooling output during a typical cooling season, divided by the total electric energy input during that same period.
That being said, the higher the SEER rating, the better. However, this does not mean “the bigger the system, the better.” Air conditioning size should not be correlated with efficiency. Even an air conditioner with the highest SEER rating possible will not save any energy if it’s not the correct size. An AC that is too large for your home will go through a process called short cycling, where it rapidly and frequently turns on and off as it struggles to reach the desired temperature in your living space.
Consider All Your Options
So you currently have a central air conditioner—it makes sense to replace it with a newer central air conditioner, right? Well… maybe. You might find that another model will suit your needs better than a central unit. For example:
- Heat Pumps: This is a good choice if you are also going to replace your furnace soon. The reason is, that a heat pump cools and heats your home, all from one system—for optimal comfort throughout the entire year.
- Ductless Systems: Are your ducts falling apart? Or maybe you want to extend the reach of your air conditioning efforts due to a home remodeling. Either of these (or just the fact that you’d like a more efficient and effective cooling system) are good reasons to consider going ductless.
- Zoned Cooling: This is a great option if you decide to stick with the central AC unit, but have a home that suffers from uneven cooling during the summer. This is particularly notable if you have a multi-story home or a house with a lot of rooms. Zoned cooling also lets you cool the rooms in your home that need it while limiting the air conditioning that unoccupied rooms get, for great energy—and cost—savings!
